Legacy
Romans 12

Series: Legacy
Message: Legacy or inheritance which one would you choose?
Preacher: Zan Long
Daily Walk: Zan Long

Refresh: Open with prayer. Read or listen to Psalm 89:1–8.

Read: Romans 12 (ESV). As you re-read the text for the final time this week in the English Standard Version, what new insights did you discover about God’s character?

Reflect: Isaiah 41:10: He holds me with His righteous right hand and says do not fear for I will help you. My father has worked hard all his life. He built up his business and his reputation and I'm sure he hoped to pass that business to his children. However my brother and I never became mechanics and the business was sold several years ago. While we have not inherited the business, we have lived and learned from his legacy. Dad became the roadside assistance guy in the area—the only one for the 80 km radius of the town. This meant that at any time he could be called out to rescue or repair someone stuck on the side of the road or even in their own driveway.
I asked him once why he kept doing this exhausting job and he said to me “Zan, every time I get called out on a job, I think that it could be you or your brother out there and I need to go and do what I’m good at doing to get them going on their way." Simply, my dad's legacy has been: Treat everyone as family. Help people on their way to Jesus even if they don’t know that is where they are going yet. While my Dad may not have found the words to say this, His actions have shouted them.
This comment from my dad would have meant nothing if I had not witnessed the endless middle of the night call outs, the leaving of social events to replace a battery or to tow a broken-down car into the shop. Or how many times I cam home to find strangers in our house being fed by my mum while they where waiting for their car to be fixed. What we say and what we do speak to the bigger picture of who rules our lives.

Recalibrate:

  1. Who has treated you like family this week?
  2. How are your actions and words leaving a legacy of love?

Respond: Pray for a heart that sees everyone as family.

Research: What is the definition of legacy? What is your definition of legacy?
